Commentary: Regarding the upper two lines: visible form, odor, taste, and tangibles are called the four external dhātus; these are termed that which cleaves and that which is cleaved. When the four dusts form an axe, they are termed that which cleaves. When the four dusts form firewood and the like, they are termed that which is cleaved. Question: "What phenomenon is called cleaving?" Answer: "When an aggregate of matter such as firewood arises in contiguous succession, and an axe or the like divides it so that they arise in separate successions, this phenomenon is called cleaving."
