"While in the future those of the mental [consciousness] are universal": greed, hatred, and pride of the future mental consciousness pervade the three time periods, and as long as they are unabandoned, they are all capable of binding. Because the future mental consciousness binds the objects of the three time periods and all matters, it can bind universally and is called universal. Namely, because the objects of the future mental consciousness flow through the three time periods, it is called universal in time periods. Moreover, because the varieties of this mental consciousness are boundless, it necessarily binds universally with respect to the matters taken as objects; hence it is also called universal in matters.
