If one cultivates the meditation on the repulsive by taking the skeleton as objective support, it cures all four desires, because in a skeleton there are no objects of the four desires. Now, we should first explain the contemplation of the skeleton. This is associated only with mental attention born of resolute intention (adhimukti-manaskāra). 'Resolute intention' means contemplation through imaginative projection, namely, forming a superior resolute understanding of repulsiveness in bodily form. Because this meditation on the repulsive takes only a partial object as support, it does not sever the afflictions. For severing afflictions necessarily requires taking everything as support; it can only suppress desire, preventing it from arising actively.
