The author of the treatise answers, saying: "Strictly speaking, the fruit is solely the capacity of the flower. Because the prior seed serves successively as cause, inducing the capacity to produce the fruit within the flower, with reference to the successive cause it is said that the seed produces the fruit. Therefore, because this capacity to produce the fruit within the flower was successively induced by the prior seed, the characteristics of the produced fruit resemble the seed. Now, karma producing a fruit is also like an external seed: with karma preceding, it perfumes and forms seeds; through continuum and transformation, differentiated fruits arise."
