"Moisture-born and apparitional [beings] are attracted to the fragrant place": generally speaking, taking rebirth always requires generating attachment; since moisture-born and apparitional beings have no womb, on what do they base the arising of attachment? Therefore it is said that the moisture-born are born out of attraction to fragrance; that is, smelling from afar the fragrance of their birthplace, they give rise to attachment and go there to take rebirth; karma being superior or inferior, the fragrance is clean or foul. Apparitionally born beings are born out of attraction to the place; that is, seeing and knowing from afar the place where they are to be born, they give rise to attachment and go there to take rebirth; karma according with good or evil, the place is clean or foul. Because they give rise to an inverted mind in the hell destiny, they also produce attachment; that is, those intermediate existences either see their own bodies harassed by cold rain and freezing wind, and seeing a fiercely hot hell, their feelings delight in warm touch and they cast their bodies into it; or they see their own bodies tormented by hot wind and roaring flames, and seeing a cold hell, their minds desire coolness and they cast their bodies into it. Ancient masters of old spoke as follows: seeing beforehand companions who created evil karma alongside them, they rush off toward them.
