From "From birth there is old age and death" downward is the twelfth branch. Decline and decrepitude are old age; coming to the end is death. The Sarvāstivādins say: "Old age and death are the two characteristics of change and cessation (sthity-anyathātva and anityatā); they derive their name from the characteristics." As for "From old age and death, therefore, there are sorrow, grief, and all manner of suffering and distress": these four are set apart from within the branch of old age and death, and so are not established as separate branches. A sūtra states: "At the time of approaching death, clinging to life and fearing death is named sorrow (śoka). Giving voice to weeping and wailing is designated as grief (parideva). What corresponds to the five sense faculties is physical pain (duḥkha); what corresponds to the mental faculty is mental distress (daurmanasya)."
