「從有而有生」者,第十一生支。數人生以起為義,故云「世中起故生」。《成論》是本無今有義。數人又云:生是生相,從相得名。

"From becoming there is birth": this is the eleventh, the branch of birth (jāti). The Sarvāstivādins take arising as the meaning of birth; thus they say: "Because it arises in the world, it is birth." In the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra, it means existing now where there was previously nothing. The Sarvāstivādins also say: "Birth is the characteristic of arising (jāti-lakṣaṇa); it gets its name from the characteristic."
