The prose commentary first explains the first half of the verse: emptiness was taught in order to eliminate two things: first, to eliminate all views; second, to eliminate all cravings. These cravings and views pervade both internal and external [teachings], both Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna. From "If a person with respect to emptiness" downward explains the second half, again opening into four distinct parts: first, the exposition of the principle; from "Just as" downward is the second, an exposition by simile; from "Like emptiness" downward is the third, applying the simile; from "If one departs from this emptiness" downward clarifies the intent of the Buddha's teaching in utilizing emptiness.
