From "If phenomena are empty of intrinsic nature" onward is the fourth refutation, the gate of empty and non-empty. Emptiness of intrinsic nature in coming-to-be and dissolution has four kinds, which were already explained under the eight negations: first, the emptiness of a fixed nature, which is the emptiness of wrong views, called emptiness of intrinsic nature; second, the emptiness taught to refute intrinsic nature, called emptiness of intrinsic nature; third, the original emptiness of having an intrinsic nature, called emptiness of intrinsic nature; fourth, that the original nature of the causes and conditions of all phenomena is empty. All four of these kinds are empty; within emptiness there is no coming-to-be or dissolution of things; and non-empty is permanent, so it also lacks coming-to-be and dissolution. Furthermore, this "nature" is the nature of an entity's own substance: if it has a self-entity, it does not rely on conditions, and is thus called permanent, and what is permanent has no coming-to-be or dissolution. If it lacks a self-entity, then there are no things; what then could come to be or dissolve?
