There is another explanation: herein, only if a dharma has six meanings is a distinct stage established. What are the six? First, lack of confusion: this excludes those of indefinite nature whose practice arises in accordance with conditions. Second, generating the resolve [for awakening]: this excludes those without gotra who cannot generate the resolve. Third, having superior efficacy: this excludes innately acquired wholesome roots, which cannot realize the fruit. Fourth, distinction: this excludes the common substance of the stage of naturally pure cessation. Fifth, shared fruition: this excludes the fruit of non-abiding [nirvāṇa], which is exclusively unshared. Sixth, being that which is superimposition-based: this excludes the unassociated [dharmas], which have no distinct substantial nature and are not that upon which something is superimposed.
