The second explanation says: due to the eighth consciousness, two designations of "seed" are obtained: first, the direct cause-condition, which is the seed within consciousness; second, the sovereign condition, which is the consciousness holding the seeds; relying on the fundamental, the meaning of being able to produce is also called seed. Because that treatise differentiates the two conditions, it says the active [consciousness] is included in the simultaneously existing basis. Because of the meaning of being able to produce, this treatise says the active eighth [consciousness] is also called a seed. The seed is that which is grasped, and the active [consciousness] that can serve as support is that which grasps the basis; therefore they also do not contradict each other.
