Regarding 'that which is conformed to, that which is conformed to by nature as support, that which is conformed to by nature as dependent support', there are many explanations for this. The Tripiṭaka Master [Xuanzang] had two explanations. One explanation: The causal ālaya is that which is conformed to by the seeds; the resultant ālaya is that which is by nature the support. Furthermore, the ālaya as its own characteristic is named that which is conformed to; the seed ālaya depends upon its own characteristic, hence it is called dependent; the resultant ālaya's perfuming is named that which is by nature the support. Another explanation: The objective aspect (nimittabhāga) of the foundational consciousness is named that which is conformed to; the subjective aspect (darśanabhāga) is named that which is by nature the support. It is also said that 'that which is conformed to' refers to the causal subjective aspect, while words such as 'dependent' speak of the self-witnessing aspect (svasaṃvittibhāga).
