The initiation of action has four conditions. The first three correspond respectively to the three kinds of volition: namely, deliberation, determination, and mobilization. According to the Hīnayāna, the first two extend to defilements severed by seeing and by cultivation, while the third is severed only by cultivation. Now according to the Mahāyāna, in initiating action for total fruition, the first two extend to seeing and cultivation, while the third consists only of defilements of the path of seeing. If initiating wholesome total fruition, all three volitions are wholesome, and the defilements directly inducing them, such as unshared ignorance, are also severed by the path of seeing.
