Regarding the ātyantika, an ultimate person, and the icchantika, one who has gotra: the Abhidharmasamuccaya states that both alike sever the roots of goodness. Roots of goodness are of two kinds: first, seeds; second, active manifestations. Subduing the potency of the seeds so that they do not proceed to active manifestation is called "severing," not the severing of the seeds themselves. It is only the severing of innate wholesome roots born of the desire realm, not wholesome roots acquired through effort, because wholesome roots acquired through effort are superior and have already ceased to arise during the prior preparatory stage; they are severed through nine grades, not in a single instant; they are severed through uninterrupted deliberation, not like being destroyed by the path.
