It requires sharp faculties to sever, not dull faculties; vast evil aspiration severs, narrow aspiration cannot; among humans, in the three continents except the north. The first fascicle of the Abhidharmasamuccaya states: Only the highest-of-the-highest wrong views of the desire realm can sever the roots of goodness, not the others; hence they are only wrong views under suffering and origination, not regarding cessation and the path; or they extend to wrong views under the four truths. It must be an active aspect, not the others; it requires the absence of shame and remorse, both having no fear of evil, and not the other two moral natures; being evil and without kindness or compassion—only relying on this force of cause can the roots of goodness be severed, while the force of conditions must depend on associating with friends.
