If one relies on the Abhidharmakośa, making four alternatives regarding the exhaustion of lifespan, non-exhaustion of merit, and so forth, it can be known. If one relies on the Abhidharmasamuccaya, first one takes death through exhaustion of lifespan and pairs it with death through exhaustion of karma to make four alternatives: 1. Death through exhaustion of lifespan, but not through exhaustion of karma: as in the Mahāyāna, where a single karma produces multiple lives; as in the first life, one dies due to the exhaustion of lifespan while the force of karma is not yet exhausted. 2. Death through exhaustion of karma, but not through exhaustion of lifespan: as when a certain karma induces only one hundred years, and after the one hundred years are complete, due to encountering superior conditions, one further extends one's lifespan, and dies before the extended lifespan is exhausted. 3. [Both exhausted] can be known. 4. Death where neither is exhausted: the class of premature deaths. Next, one takes death through exhaustion of merit and pairs it with death through exhaustion of lifespan to make four alternatives: there is death through exhaustion of merit, such as dying of hunger and cold; there is death through exhaustion of lifespan and not through exhaustion of merit, like a very wealthy person who dies leaving surplus wealth; death where both merit and lifespan are exhausted, where clothing, food, and life are exhausted at the same time; death where neither is exhausted, like a very wealthy person who is killed by others unexpectedly.
