The Abhidharmasamuccaya speaks of three deaths: first, death due to the exhaustion of lifespan, as when born in the northern continent, where the maximum lifespan is one hundred years, and though karma is not yet exhausted, one dies due to the exhaustion of life; second, death due to the exhaustion of merit, where due to clinging to dhyāna, clothing and food are lacking, and one dies due to unexpected conditions; third, death due to the exhaustion of karma, due to the exhaustion of the karma of the three times. This treatise distinguishes death solely relying on present conditions and does not rely on past conditions, hence there is no death through the exhaustion of karma. Among external conditions, what departs from oneself is called the exhaustion of merit, and what impinges upon oneself is called disparities. The Abhidharmasamuccaya generally explains both past and present conditions combined as merit, so the two treatises differ.
