Under the eight developmental stages, the Wuwang jing says: in the first seven days, like thin curd; in the second seven days, like thick curd; in the third seven days, like coagulated ghee; in the fourth seven days, like transformed flesh; in the fifth seven days, the fetus matures, winds arise and enter the womb blowing upon its body; in the sixth, the sense faculties unfold; dwelling in the mother's womb below the stomach for fresh food and above the stomach for digested food, and so on up to ten months. Furthermore, kalala here means mixed impurity and also means combination; this is the initial arising of the causes of manifold sufferings; since its damage and affliction are vast, it is metaphorically named "arrow." The Kośa calls it "thorn," meaning thin, soft, and thick. Arbuda here means blister and also means polyp. Peśī here means curdled mass. Ghana here means solid mass. Praśākhā here means branches. If these eight stages are subsumed under the twelve links: the first one extends across both the consciousness link and the name-and-form link, because its substance lasts many moments; next, the five stages from arbuda through hair, fur, and nails are solely in the name-and-form link; the two stages of faculties and form are in the six sense spheres link.
