Question: Why are there seven fires before one water disaster? Answer: In the second dhyāna, the Parīttābha heaven has a lifespan of two kalpas, the Apramāṇābha heaven four kalpas, and the Ābhāsvara heaven eight kalpas. If a water disaster arose right after one fire, how could that heaven have a lifespan of eight kalpas? From this it is shown that after seven waters, seven fires arise again before one wind disaster; in total, it shows that eight-times-seven fires and one-time-seven waters occur before the wind disaster is completed. In the third dhyāna, the Parīttaśubha heaven has a lifespan of sixteen kalpas, the Apramāṇaśubha heaven thirty-two kalpas, and the Śubhakṛtsna heaven sixty-four kalpas. Eight-times-seven fires and one-time-seven waters precede one wind; waters and fires, nine sevens, make sixty-three, and the final wind disaster makes sixty-four. Hence the destruction kalpas of the three disasters are each distinct.
