Ji relates that the Tripiṭaka Master said: 'As for the synonyms, essential characteristics, and explanation of names: these are the unimpeded comprehension of teachings and meanings, because the signifiers and signifieds have many synonymic distinctions, and so forth. The distinctions of cause and effect are the unimpeded comprehension of eloquence, because one eloquently explains cause and effect. Moreover, if we refer to the concluding text below, it only says "due to the gift of wealth and due to the gift of Dharma"; this concludes the above two categories. "Due to unimpeded comprehension": it does not specify which unimpeded comprehension it is. Why does it not say that all four unimpeded comprehensions are included? Now it is explained as follows: with respect to the aforementioned gift of wealth, gift of Dharma, and gift of fearlessness, all synonyms are unimpeded comprehension of teachings, for scriptural teachings mostly distinguish dharmic characteristics by means of synonyms. The essential characteristic is unimpeded comprehension of meaning, for the signified meaning is mostly stated as essential characteristic based on the real entity. The explanation of names refers to unimpeded comprehension of language, because it explains names. The distinctions of cause and effect are unimpeded comprehension of eloquence, because one can eloquently expound matters of cause and effect of phenomena. Thus, all four unimpeded comprehensions are present herein. Because one possesses these unimpeded comprehensions regarding the giving of wealth and so forth, practicing giving with true knowledge is called giving with unimpeded comprehension. Furthermore, within each of the four unimpeded comprehensions there are synonyms, essential characteristics, and even causes and effects; they need not be matched separately. Now, collating with the old treatise, it says: "analogous characteristics, distinguishing names, meanings, causes, and effects"; therefore, Ji's statement that synonyms are the unimpeded comprehension of teachings and so forth is an excellent explanation.'
