The treatise says: "Moreover, regarding all giving of bodhisattvas, that is, giving of material wealth, giving of Dharma, and giving of fearlessness, giving [with skillful wisdom] ...": following the explanation of the two givings, the concluding passage follows below. The Dharma Master says: If it is alternate designations, essential characteristics, and explanation of terms, this is the unhindered comprehension of dharmas and meanings, because the expresser and the expressed have many distinctions of alternate designations, and so forth; if it is the distinctions of cause and effect, it is the unhindered comprehension of discourse, because it discusses cause and effect. Furthermore, if one follows the concluding passage below, it only says "due to the giving of material wealth" and "due to the giving of Dharma"—this concludes the above two gates; and "due to unhindered comprehension"—it does not state which unhindered comprehension it is. Why does it not state that the four unhindered dharmas subsume it? It is explained now by saying: within the previous giving of material wealth, giving of Dharma, and giving of fearlessness, all alternate designations are the unhindered comprehension of dharmas, for teachings mostly distinguish the characteristics of dharmas by alternate designations; essential characteristics are the unhindered comprehension of meanings, for the expressed meaning mostly concerns the real essence, and essence is called characteristic; explanation of terms refers to the unhindered comprehension of etymology, because it explains names; the distinction of cause and effect is the unhindered comprehension of discourse, because one is already able to discuss affairs of cause and effect. Thus, the four unhindered comprehensions are all present within this. Having these unhindered comprehensions regarding the giving of material wealth and so forth, knowing them in accordance with reality and then practicing giving, is called skillful wisdom. Furthermore, within the four unhindered comprehensions, each possesses alternate designations, essential characteristics, up to cause and effect, etc., and they need not be matched separately. This is the main meaning.
