10.172

前明施品以除外慳，今次持戒以防內垢，故此品來，文中有三：初問；次解；後結。解中復三：初、解九門淨戒；第二、明戒勝利；第三、明戒所作。前中初頌及長行開列九門，後依門辨即為九段。

The previous chapter explained the "Chapter on Giving" to eliminate external stinginess; now next is maintaining morality to prevent internal defilement, which is why this chapter follows. In the text there are three parts: first, the question; next, the explanation; finally, the conclusion. In the explanation there are again three: first, explaining the nine gateways of pure morality; second, clarifying the superior benefits of morality; third, clarifying the functions of morality. In the first part, the initial verse and prose open and list the nine gateways, and afterwards, distinguishing them according to the gateways constitutes nine sections.
