Another question: According to the text below, a wise person wishing to bestow the bodhisattva precepts should first explain to them the bodhisattva precepts and the characteristics of transgressing the precepts, causing them to reflect on whether they are capable of receiving the precepts. Why is it that for a śrāvaka, the four major offenses and the four reliances are explained only after receiving the precepts, whereas for a bodhisattva the precepts and the characteristics of transgression are explained first? Answer: In the śrāvaka Dharma, if they were explained first, there is the fear that it would become a 'dwelling as a thief', so they cannot be explained beforehand; for a bodhisattva it is not so: one must face-to-face first deliberate whether the bodhisattva is capable or incapable, and only then bestow them.
