第三明戒因，若總相辨因即菩提心。故此文云：發無上菩提願已。若別論者，即發三心為三聚因，謂斷惡修善度生也。又若依攝論，五根為三聚因，精進為初戒因，智根為第二戒因，定根為第三戒因，信念二根通三戒因，以此二根能通攝護故。

Third, explaining the causes of the precepts: if distinguishing the cause in its general aspect, it is bodhicitta. Therefore this text states: 'Having aroused the vow for unsurpassed bodhi.' If discussing them individually, the arousing of the three minds is the cause of the three aggregates [of precepts]—namely, severing evil, cultivating good, and saving sentient beings. Furthermore, if relying on the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, the five faculties are the causes of the three aggregates: energy is the cause of the first precept [aggregate]; the faculty of wisdom is the cause of the second precept [aggregate]; the faculty of concentration is the cause of the third precept [aggregate]; and the two faculties of faith and mindfulness are common causes of all three precept [aggregates], because these two faculties are capable of generally gathering and protecting them.
