Jing says: 'I now wish to go to a good son' refers to seeking precepts everywhere among those who have gone forth but have not received the bodhisattva precepts. 'Or to an elder (āyuṣmat)' refers to junior renunciants. 'Or to a venerable one (bhadanta)' refers to senior renunciants. Now examining the Vinayapiṭaka, the Samantapāsādikā says that seniors are called 'venerable ones' and juniors are called 'elders'. Vinaya Master Shou says: this is also not fixed; for example, in the precept on dragging another out of a cell in the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya, the group of seventeen junior monks said to the group of six: 'The elders are our seniors.' Furthermore, at the Council of the Five Hundred, Revata called the foremost senior who had gone beyond all others 'venerable elder'. The Sarvāstivāda Vinaya says: 'From now on, do not directly call a senior merely an elder; you should say "Elder so-and-so", as when calling Elder Śāriputra, Maudgalyāyana, and so forth.'
