Regarding the individual explanations, according to the old translation of the treatise there are forty-two minor precepts, while the new translation has forty-three. Comparing the two editions, the old treatise lacks the ninth precept on the seven branches of innate offenses such as killing and stealing, because they are purely unshared, so the count is forty-two. The new treatise includes it, hence having a full forty-three. Therein, if the eight prescriptive offenses are divided into two based on being shared or unshared, one should say the count is forty-four. Furthermore, in the twenty-ninth, on hearing the bodhisattva basket and the supernormal powers of the Buddhas without producing faith and understanding, slander and double-tongued speech could be separately divided into two, which should make the count forty-five; however, at present both places are combined, hence it is said that the count is forty-three. According to the Renwang jing, there are forty-eight kinds, but they are not listed by name. In the Fanwang jing there are forty-eight, individually explained one by one, yet most of the marks of the precepts are different from those clarified in this treatise.
