Second, the seven branches of innate offenses are purely unshared; when a bodhisattva acts through provisional means for the sake of beings, it is not an offense. If, on account of guarding morality, one neglects the great practice of benefiting beings, that is also called an offense. This entire passage is completely absent from the old treatise, having been omitted in translation. If one follows Master Jing, this passage still belongs to the first of the six regarding morality. Now, examining the phrasing of the text, one could also agree with Jing; however, because prescriptive and innate [offenses] differ, it is separately taken as one precept. Therein, first there is a general indication, and later an individual explanation of the seven. Ce says: Herein, killing is explained according to bodhisattvas on the great stages. If it is from the eighth bhūmi upward, because they constantly enter contemplation at all times, they kill only with a wholesome mind; from the seventh bhūmi downward, because they have states of entering and emerging from contemplation, they can kill with an indeterminate mind; therefore, it is not before the stages.
