Regarding "toward their manifold characteristics of calming, exertion, and equanimity, and characteristics of entering, abiding, and arising": as explained previously in the Samāhitā Bhūmiḥ. Regarding the words "being able to know well," etc.: the older treatise has only two clauses, namely "always observing well and not conceptualizing falsely." Now, according to this text, there are three clauses: first, "being able to know well" means being able to know the characteristics of entering; "being able to be without delusion or loss" means not being deluded about the characteristics of abiding; "being able to penetrate well" means penetrating the characteristics of arising.
