始業初業者，基云：始業初業，即初發心前明五停心觀等是。測云：種解脫分善根名為始業，五停心觀名為初業。

Regarding "beginners and novices": Ji says: Beginners and novices are those prior to the initial generation of the mind, such as the contemplation of the fivefold stilling of the mind explained before. Ce says: Planting the roots of goodness conducive to liberation is called beginner; the contemplation of the fivefold stilling of the mind is called novice.
