Analysis through four gates: First, types—there are three: 1. non-retrogression due to being insatiable in hearing the Dharma; 2. non-retrogression due to constant great vigor; 3. non-retrogression due to constant [endurance of] the suffering of saṃsāra. Second, bases—there are two: 1. shame (hrī); 2. courage. One who possesses shame does not retrogress, for to retrogress is shameful. One who possesses courage does not retrogress, for retrogression is not valiant. Third, essential nature—namely, aspiration for and delight in great bodhi; for if aspiration and delight turn away, one retrogresses. Fourth, distinctions—there are three: 1. not yet accomplished, which refers to the non-retrogression of bodhisattvas at the stage of practicing through faith; 2. accomplished, which refers to the non-retrogression of bodhisattvas from the first stage to the seventh stage; 3. fully accomplished non-retrogression, which refers to the non-retrogression of bodhisattvas on the eighth stage and above. Therefore, it is known that mental factor of aspiration (chanda) constitutes the essence of tirelessness.
