In the former part, Jing says: The sequences of the four reliances differ in sūtras and treatises, broadly having five kinds: 1. The sequence of contemplation and entry, as stated in the Tattvasiddhi: first, relying on the Dharma and not relying on the person; second, relying on the definitive meaning and not relying on sūtras of non-definitive meaning; third, relying on the meaning and not relying on the letter; fourth, relying on wisdom and not relying on consciousness. This is in terms of the sequence of contemplation and entry through hearing, thinking, and cultivation: first, relying on the Dharma and not relying on the person, and relying on sūtras of definitive meaning and not non-definitive, selects the true and takes the correct, practicing to accomplish wisdom arisen from hearing. Third, relying on the meaning and not relying on the letter selects the true and takes the correct, practicing to accomplish wisdom arisen from thinking. Fourth, relying on the dharmas practiced by the wisdom of the sages, one practices to accomplish wisdom arisen from cultivation.
