Second, the sequence of functioning proceeding from root to branch, as the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says: First, 'relying on the Dharma and not relying on the person'—the Dharma is the essential principle of tathatā. Second, 'relying on the meaning and not relying on the words'—the meaning is the fruition of Buddhahood, namely, prajñā, liberation, and the Dharmakāya; because virtues are accomplished based on principle, it is explained next. Third, 'relying on gnosis and not relying on consciousness'—gnosis is the Buddha's gnosis, which is function; since function arises based on virtue, it is explained next. Fourth, 'relying on definitive sūtras and not relying on non-definitive ones'—since teaching arises based on gnosis, it is explained last.
