Fifth, the sequence of undertaking cultivation relying on the principle of the meaning, as explained here: First, relying on the meaning and not relying on the words, which means taking all the meanings expressed by the teachings as one's reliance and not relying on the words. Although one relies on the meaning, only if the meaning does not contradict those four dharmas of reasoning can it be relied upon; therefore, reliance [on the Dharma] is explained next. Second, the Dharma—the Dharma is the dharmas of the four kinds of reasoning. The above two clarify the sequence based on the principle of the meaning; the latter two are the sequence of undertaking cultivation. Third, relying on definitive sūtras and not relying on non-definitive sūtras—that is, the teachings that express the three natures are definitive sūtras, while other teachings are non-definitive and cannot serve as a reliance. Because one cultivates and accomplishes the gnosis of realization by relying on the definitive teachings, fourth, relying on gnosis and not relying on hearing and thinking is explained next.
