Tai says: "People in the Western regions offer to temples and effigies of devas and spirits, sometimes smearing them with orpiment or dousing and washing them with ghee; these are all foul substances, hence called defiled offerings. Bodhisattvas do not do this. Guggulu is translated here as benzoin (anxixiang); arka flowers are red flowers; these are both fragrant flowers offered to spirits and ghosts, and therefore should not be offered to the Buddha."
