Below, it separately refutes the characteristic of cessation. The meaning is: If there were a characteristic of cessation that was different in nature from conditioned phenomena and yet caused conditioned phenomena to cease, then upon the arising of a single characteristic of cessation, all phenomena should cease, because their substances are different and yet it causes them to cease. For example, when light arises, all darkness ceases; in this way, night, with little exertion of effort, would be able to cease conditioned phenomena, just as upon entering the meditative attainment of cessation, all minds and mental factors completely cease. Furthermore, previously, because the characteristic of cessation arose, conditioned phenomena accordingly ceased; then, because the characteristic of cessation ceased, the conditioned phenomena that had previously ceased should right away be reborn, because there would be no counteracting phenomenon.
