Regarding "by five causal conditions one engages in unfruitful application toward sentient beings up to its characteristics should be known": this is as explained previously in the Chapter on Worship. If bodhisattvas possess five characteristics, they are able to be good friends whose deeds are not in vain: first, they initially desire to accomplish benefit and well-being for others; second, they know such benefit and well-being as it truly is, with non-erroneous comprehension; third, they are capable and powerful in skillful means, preaching the Dharma in accordance with propriety according to what beings are capable of receiving and being subdued by; fourth, their mind of benefiting others knows no weariness; fifth, they are endowed with impartial great compassion, having no bias toward inferior, middling, or superior classes of sentient beings. This briefly explains two kinds.
