In the group of nine, regarding 'those to be transformed by the Tathāgata,' and so forth: Ce says: 'There may be a class of sentient beings who can only be transformed by the Tathāgata. As the Nirvāṇa Sūtra states: Śāriputra had two disciples, one the son of a pearl-piercer and one the son of a washerman, whom he ultimately could not transform. Later they went to the Buddha's place, and the Buddha taught the washerman the contemplation of white bones, and taught the pearl-piercer the counting of breaths; before long, both attained the path, and so forth. Furthermore, because of differences in time, it speaks of "subduing near and far." The realm of Yama refers to the world of ghosts, with King Yama as its lord; "Yama" here translates as quietude. The immeasurable realm of means of subduing as explained previously refers to what was fully explained in the preceding Chapter on Accomplishment regarding twenty-seven kinds of skillful means. Therefore the old treatise says: "As explained previously in the Chapter on Accomplishment." According to the Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra, it takes the twelve divisions of teachings as means.'
