Jing says: whenever one experiences painful contact and conceives a self and laments, this must occur after one's prime of life; hence it says that being touched by a sharply painful physical feeling, one conceives a self and what belongs to a self, and so forth. The suffering experienced in the present is in fact induced by past karma; encountering this suffering of retribution, one does not know where it came from, hence it is named the suffering born of the ripening of delusion.
