As for the statement "namely, regarding all activities bordering on thickets": this broadly brings up the eleven thickets; the eleven thickets, such as mental activity, are precisely the objective spheres contemplated by the bodhisattva. "Such defilement, such purification": this is the thicket of mental activity, meaning the defiled and pure mental activities. "Defiled by this": this is the thicket of afflictions and the thicket of karmic activity. "Purified by this": this is the thicket of faculty activity, namely the five faculties of faith and so forth. "What is defiled, what is purified": this refers to the thicket of faith activity, which is adhimokṣa; if conjoined with afflictions it is called "what is defiled," and if conjoined with pure dharmas it is "what is purified." "If not one-sided": this speaks of the thicket of the characteristics of nature activity and the thicket of the characteristics of profound disposition activity; they are what is contemplated by the bodhisattva, and being either with nature or without nature, they are not one-sided. "If one-sided": this is the thicket of latent tendency activity and the thicket of mental birth activity, meaning that all belonging to afflictions are exclusively defiled, while the five births of the bodhisattva, such as pacifying suffering, are pure; hence the phrase "one-sided."
