Under the distinct explanation: regarding the passage from 'Moreover, in each and every abode' up to 'attaining consummation', in each abode one cultivates and only then reaches consummation over many great kalpas of water, fire, wind, and so forth in the scriptures; however, the passage from 'all abodes' onward is a general treatment. Regarding the statements 'this refers to constant, courageous vigor' and 'this is fixed, etc.', Master Jing explains: 'In the first asaṃkhyeya [kalpa], practice fluctuates between progress and decline, and there is mere idle passing [of time]; intervals when one does not practice are excluded and not counted—the time is measured strictly with reference to wise practice. From the first bhūmi onward, time and practice correspond to each other without any idle passing, because one has attained pure resolve.' Regarding the passage 'Next, passing through the third immeasurable great kalpa, up to realizing the supreme, consummated bodhisattva abode', Master Ji asks: 'Why does this not speak of realizing the Tathāgata?'
