Ji relates the Tripiṭaka Master's words: a sūtra says: 'The Buddha told Maitreya: "You are born in a Brahmin family, while I was born in a Kṣatriya family; I was born from the right flank, while you are transformed and born from the crown of the head; I live for eighty [years], while your lifespan is sixty thousand years," and so forth.' This sūtra conflicts with the Maitreya Sūtra. In collating and examining the comprehensive text on gathering births, which states, 'only excluding the taking of birth by bodhisattvas on the mundane stages,' regarding taking the wise bodhisattvas to have five births, there are two explanations. One says: it only takes those who have entered the ten faiths and above up to the ten stages as having these five births, not taking the births assumed by bodhisattvas of the external mundane gotra prior to the ten faiths. The second explanation: it only takes the wise bodhisattvas on the great stages who take birth for the sake of sentient beings, not taking bodhisattvas on the mundane stages prior to the stages, because their [mind] toward sentient beings is not yet equal. The five births assumed from the first stage up to the seventh stage encompass transformations, while from the eighth stage and above they are solely transformation births. The Tripiṭaka Master favored the latter explanation as superior.
