First, the intrinsic nature can be understood. In the second distinguishing of the ten powers, Master Yuan says: "1. Distinguishing the powers in terms of time: among the ten powers, past lives knows the past, the divine eye knows the future, and the remaining seven know the three periods of time. The supernormal power of the destruction of the taints should be distinguished: if in terms of one's own body presently realizing the destruction of the taints, it is known as the present; in principle, the unconditioned that is known does not fall into the three periods of time; the author of the treatise applies analytical cessation to persons, hence it extends to the three periods of time. 2. Distinguishing the powers in terms of phenomena: among the ten powers, the first power is the broadest and generally knows intrinsic nature; the seventh is also like this: knowing impurity and so forth is knowing self-seeking; knowing the phenomenon of non-self is called knowing common characteristics. The power of the destruction of the taints, seeing existence and dispelling darkness, can know specific characteristics; realizing emptiness and the destruction of the taints, it can know common characteristics. The remaining seven know their own intrinsic principles. The ten powers also know the unconditioned; because the treatise intends to distinguish the ten powers according to category, it does not certify the unconditioned. 3. Distinguishing the powers in terms of persons: the ten powers all take all sentient beings as objects, and know the means of benefit for distinct sentient beings."
