It also says that the two bodies—the response and transformation bodies—are with remainder, while the Dharma body is without remainder. This is explained with respect to the other-enjoyment body and the transformation body: when their activation has not ceased, it is called with remainder; when these two cease, it is called without remainder, because once the self-enjoyment body is attained, it continues without interruption. What is clarified now does not speak of nirvāṇa with remainder, but only speaks of having a remainder of support; therefore, one must not take it exclusively as nirvāṇa. The Commentary explains: The "stage with remainder of support" refers to the stage of nirvāṇa with remainder of support. "Support" is the support for the tainted, of which there are briefly eight kinds: first, the support for designation, up to the eighth, the support of the final limit. Now, it takes the entire one support of the final limit; eliminating the six matters of embracing, transmigration, and obstruction, it takes a portion of the rest. Furthermore, in this stage there are four tranquillities; arhats and others abiding in the stage of the non-learner possess the four tranquillities and have a slight remainder of support; therefore it is called the stage with remainder of support. This stage takes all tainted dharmas in the bodies of non-learners of the two vehicles collectively as its intrinsic nature. Although the Tathāgata lacks tainted remainder of support of a truly fixed body and mind, there is a transformation-body semblance of a tainted support; therefore, with respect to external signs, it may also be called the stage with remainder of support.
