12.96

菩薩如是善於勝義至一切有為，是第四方便攝受生死句，謂菩薩善達真如故悲愍有情，知煩惱繫故眾緣合故離我我所及諸染污，不是離煩惱眾緣合外別有繫有情。如是知故不捨生死住在涅槃，為愍有情不應永滅一切有為入般涅槃，應入生死教化有情，是此中意也。

From "The bodhisattva is thus skilled in the ultimate truth... up to... all conditioned things" is the fourth clause, on skill in means taking hold of saṃsāra; that is, because the bodhisattva is well versed in tathatā, he has compassion for sentient beings, knowing that through the bonds of affliction and through the assembly of manifold conditions they are free from self, what belongs to self, and all defilements, and that apart from the assembly of afflictions and manifold conditions there are no separate bound sentient beings. Knowing this, he does not abandon saṃsāra to abide in nirvāṇa; out of compassion for sentient beings, he should not permanently extinguish all conditioned things and enter parinirvāṇa, but should enter saṃsāra to teach and transform sentient beings—this is the meaning here.
