Concerning the phrase 'either takes objects all at once or not all at once': Jing says: Taking the five sense-objects collectively is called 'all at once', and so forth. Tai says: This explains the preceding phrase, 'or at one time it is accompanied by three, four, up to seven [consciousnesses].' That is, if the five consciousnesses exist, why is there definitely a mental consciousness? To resolve this query: because the mental consciousness can also understand the objects of the other five consciousnesses, when the five consciousnesses arise, the mental consciousness definitely exists. According to this principle, there are three, four, up to seven co-arising.
