In the third section, clarifying that the ālaya functions together with minds of the three moral natures: Jing says: This meaning is slightly difficult, and in the Western regions there are two interpretations. The first says: When it says here that the ālaya functions together with minds of the three natures, this means that from beginning to end it can be together with minds of the three natures, not that this occurs at a single moment. This master explains that due to the force of the preceding six consciousnesses—initial attention, seeking, and so forth—the six consciousnesses and their contaminations are aroused at once; but only in a single moment can the six consciousnesses be parallel, and in sequence they only produce the mental consciousness, and the mental consciousness in sequence further produces the six consciousnesses. When the six consciousnesses cease, once again only the mental consciousness arises alone; all of them are of a single nature, unmixed with any other nature. This explanation contradicts the above. Previously it was clarified that the ālaya, together with the seven consciousnesses and the three feelings, can function together at the exact same time.
