The second master explains that during the state of equal defilement, the continuity of the five consciousnesses can possess the three natures parallel to the ālaya. Master Ji also says: In the Western regions, there are two theories regarding those who advocate sequential versus non-sequential taking of objects by the five consciousnesses: First, the position of those who advocate sequential taking of objects: because the mind of initial attention lasts only a single kṣaṇa, continuity exists only in the mind of equal outflow. For example, when the eye consciousness takes a wholesome object and arises up to the mind of equal outflow, a single category continuously arises by itself; then the ear consciousness arises up to equal outflow, taking unwholesome sound and continuously arising in its own category. Before the preceding wholesome eye consciousness has ceased, the unwholesome ear consciousness subsequently arises. Therefore, parallel to the unmanifest neutral eighth, the three natures arise simultaneously. If one further takes one consciousness among the five consciousnesses to arise as neutral, it is readily understood, or it is the seventh. Second, the position of those who advocate non-sequential taking of objects: even up to equal outflow, the five consciousnesses also have no continuity. There are two theories: 1. In a single moment, the three natures do not arise together; here, speaking in terms of the completion of the matter, it is called a single kṣaṇa, not that the three natures arise simultaneously within a single mind-moment. 2. Just as before, when the wholesome eye consciousness arises up to the mind of equal outflow, the ear consciousness of initial attention arises, and when the unwholesome ear consciousness of equal outflow arises, the eye consciousness also arises; therefore at this one time, wholesome and unwholesome occur together.
