Yet another correct explanation: Bodhisattvas are able to know the eighth, but persons of the two vehicles are not. For persons of the two vehicles here, the path of seeing contemplates relying on the evolving consciousnesses as object; later, entering the seeing of the truths, they fully know all defilements and all bindings and the like. Bodhisattvas prior to the stages truly take the eighth as an object; with reference to those who have not yet taken it as an object, it is called 'taking the evolving consciousnesses as cognitive object'; later, entering the seeing of the truths, they take the ālayavijñāna as an object. The ālayavijñāna is not an object for the two vehicles.
