Answer: Within this there are two explanations. First, regarding the six consciousnesses having the intrinsic nature of discerning: because the nature of those six consciousnesses is light and agile, rapidly shifting, and reliant upon the power of faculties, objects, associates, and so forth, they are immeasurably diverse and cannot be classified into various kinds according to external circumstances; because they are of the same class of eye consciousness, up to a fixed class of consciousness, they are established by intrinsic nature. These derive their respective names from their respective bases, just as fire from ramie or the like, although arising in reliance upon multiple conditions, does not exceed the six consciousnesses in terms of classes of intrinsic nature. However, the names of the six consciousnesses are established from their bases because they are uncommon; objects, on the other hand, are common and can jointly generate two consciousnesses, etc. For example, if the eye faculty is lost, the eye consciousness does not arise; but even if one color-form is lost, there remain other color-forms that can generate the eye consciousness. The other faculties and objects arise in their own continuity without confusion, so they are established solely in relation to the bases and objects of the six consciousnesses.
