The second explanation establishes them collectively based on the intrinsic nature of a single consciousness: 'Furthermore, a single class of consciousness, relying on respective conditions, gives rise to intrinsic natures with various distinctions,' and so forth. Here, Asaṅga and his disciples explain: although the eight essences are distinct, they are a single stream of consciousness; relying on distinct conditions, they establish names according to their supports. If, according to the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, divergent disciples of Asaṅga say that the eight kinds are essentially one consciousness, and because the faculties differ they accordingly establish eight names without difference in their essence, then this passage serves as textual proof.
